What is Magtein?

Magtein (Magnesium L-Threonate) is a specialized form of magnesium developed to more effectively cross the blood-brain barrier. Created by researchers at MIT, this unique magnesium compound is designed to support cognitive function, memory, and sleep quality. Unlike other forms of magnesium which primarily affect the body, Magtein specifically targets brain health by increasing magnesium levels in the brain, which may support synaptic density and neuroplasticity.

My Personal Experience

Key Benefits

Magnesium L-Threonate is supposed to improve sleep, cognitive ability and memory, and mood. For me, after using it for about a month or so, I have only noticed a slight improvement in sleep. I did not notice an improvement in the other areas. The improvement in sleep was nice, but I have already found supplements I like more for sleep (melatonin and coriander).

The Effects

Since Magtein doesn't provide a noticeable effect for me in areas other than sleep, I don't think I will get this one again. I may look at other forms of magnesium however, as they can have variable effects depending on the individual. According to threads I found on Reddit, some people get great effects with this supplement (seems like sleep is the standout benefit for most users).

Dosage Experience

On the bottle, Nootropics Depot recommends 2 capsules in the morning and 1 before bed. I tried following that recommendation, as well as trying all 3 before bed. I didn't really notice a huge difference either way in terms of effects regardless of when I took the capsules.

Reddit Community Insights

Positive Effects Reported:

  • Improved Sleep Quality: Multiple users reported significantly better sleep after taking Magtein, particularly with staying asleep through the night. Several mentioned it worked better than other forms of magnesium, like glycinate.
  • Cognitive and Memory Enhancement: Some users noticed sharper memory recall and better focus, with one stating it was the only supplement that gave them a reliable mental performance boost.
  • Reduced Mental Overactivity at Night: Individuals who normally struggle with a racing mind—especially those with ADHD—shared that Magtein helped quiet their thoughts before bed, especially when paired with calming supplements like L-theanine.

Negative Effects Reported:

  • Overstimulation for Some Users: A few individuals found that Magtein actually made it harder to fall asleep, suggesting it might be too stimulating for evening use in some cases.
  • Mixed Results: While some users had strong positive experiences, others reported no noticeable benefits even after regular use, pointing to variable effectiveness.
